Power System Stability: Modelling, Analysis and Control [Bookshelf]

This book is organized into four parts and 14 chapters, with one overview chapter before the main content. The overview points out the boundaries of study and gives the definition of stability for both small signals and transients. The four main parts cover modeling, power flow, stability analysis, and stability enhancement and control. As the development of power systems accelerates, requirements relating to system reliability, security, and stability are becoming ever-more stringent. System reliability refers to the ability of the system to provide a desired function under specific operating conditions. Security refers to the ability of the system to withstand contingencies without interrupting the system function. The system stability, which is mainly studied in this book, is defined as the ability of the system to continue its intact operation and remain stable following a disturbance. Consequently, stability depends on the operating condition and the nature of the physical disturbance. Similar to any other dynamic system, ensuring stable operation of a power system requires analyzing power system performance under various operating conditions and physical disturbances. To this end, the power flow within the whole power system is studied, and both the steady-state and transient stabilities are analyzed. These results about the power system are used to implement optimal control to enhance the performance and stability. However, before any analysis, optimization, or control enhancement can be done, a model of the system that covers the whole process must be available so the performance can be calculated.
