Use of lithium iron phosphate energy storage system for EV charging station demand side management

This paper presents a collection of demand side management strategies designed to reduce impact of electric vehicle (EV) fast charging operations, as such actions are very important to keep the distribution grid stability and to postpone investments in infrastructure expansion and addition of new generation. At the focal point of this work stands the proposal of a test bed comprised of an EV fast charging station coupled with an Ion-Lithium energy storage system capable of controlling the power flow between the charging station and the distribution grid. Simulation results for the adopted methods of coordination between grid, ESS and charging station, will be presented. The main approach is to use optimization algorithms to control the power flow, experimenting with different strategies to better use the energy stored during off-peak periods.
