Fixed multibeam antennas versus adaptive arrays for CDMA systems

We compare the performance of fixed multibeam antennas versus adaptive beamforming for the reverse link of IS-95 systems. A simulation model for analyzing the performance of antenna arrays in a mobile fading environment with closed loop power control is derived and applied to realistic scenarios. Simulation results are given in terms of required input signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) per antenna element (or per beam) versus frame error rate (FER) for both the adaptive array and the fixed multibeam system. According to our simulation results, the adaptive array outperforms the fixed multibeam system for small number of interferers in interference dominated scenarios.
