Overview of heat transfer aspects for inductors and transformers for power electronics

The paper presents an overview of heat transfer specifics of magnetic components for power electronics. The loss dissipation in power electronics is mainly based on convection and radiation heat transfer, thus improved models for estimating these mechanisms are presented and compared. The focus is on improved models of convection heat transfer utilizing derived values of the exponents of component height and precise view on the corresponding surface calculations and length of the air path in the equation for h
_c
. Further, an accurate presentation of corresponding surfaces for convection and radiation heat transfer ate discussed and heat transfer model to define the hot spot temperature. Useful examples of the presented improvements are calculated for common sizes of EE type ferrite cores in power electronics, thus demonstrating the accurate heat transfer data for these magnetic components.
