Brain controlled assistive buzzer system for physically impaired people

Developments in brain computer interface (BCI) technologies have facilitated the life of the people having severe physical impairments to interact and communicate with the external environment. In this paper, we proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain controlled automatic buzzer system for physically impaired people to ask for assistance from caregivers at home or in hospitals. Brain wave epochs, captured by portable non-invasive EEG device, were continuously loaded to signal processing unit for processing and feature mining. Frequency domain analyses were carried out on successive epochs to determine the transitions of the brainwaves. An algorithm was developed to translate some particular transitions which directly denote the conditions requiring special assistance into triggers to activate the buzzer. Benchmark EEG data of related patients were used to assess the performance of the proposed system. The results are presented and illustrated which shows the viability of the system with substantial accuracy.
