Available transfer capability calculation using PTDF and implementation of optimal power flow in power markets

In a Power system with deregulated environment, customers and power producers utilize a common transmission network to transfer the generated power to the customer end. In this open access framework, all parties, may attempt to buy the power from the less expensive source to accomplish high profit margins, which may bring about congestion and overloading of few corridors of the transmission network. This may bring about violation of Voltage limit, line flow and stability limits and thereby weaken the system security. Therefore, Utilities need to determine their available transfer capability (ATC) to make sure that system reliability is retained. This paper presents power transfer distribution factor (PTDF) based on AC load flow for Multi-area ATC determination and Linear Programming based Optimal Power flow analysis for marginal cost calculations. The study has been carried out for Multi-area IEEE 24 bus Test System. The studies have been performed on power world simulator software 18.0, an efficient power system analysis tool.
