A review of research methods for lightning protection in wind turbine blades and activity of CIGRE WG C4.409

In recent years lightning damages to wind-power plants are increasing as the number and size of turbines are rapidly larger. The TR IEC 61400-24 deals with lightning protection for wind turbines, with a section dealing with blades protection. It is important to clarify the effect of the energy of lightning current upon outages of windmill blades. In order to get the additional scientific background to the discussion of IEC 61400-24, the CIGRE WG C4-409 began to work for the target to know and evaluate the participation of the different lightning parameters in this mechanism, mainly when the lightning electric charge is equal to or greater than 300 Q.
