Assessment of broadband light source spectral slicing in PON systems

The present paper discusses the performance of 32-channel spectrum sliced wavelength division-multiplexed passive optical network (SS-WDM PON) operating at 10 Gbit/s transmission speed per channel with broadband ASE light source which is realized using two EDFA amplifiers. This paper compares performance of intensity modulated fiber optical spectrum sliced transmission system with NRZ and RZ line codes and direct detection. Additionally, the maximum achievable transmission distance of investigated optical transmission system is evaluated. It was found that the maximum reach of SS-WDM PON system with NRZ and RZ line codes is about 160 km, which is completely sufficient to provide 10 Gbit/s data transmission per channel with BER<;10^-3 if forward error correction (FEC) is used.
