Design and verification of 200kW interior permanent magnet synchronous motor for ship propulsion

This paper presents the power stack design and experimental verification of 200kW interior permanent magnet motor for ship propulsion. The propulsion motor requires high efficiency to cover wide range load condition and high power factor for reducing battery capacity. The required load from propulsion characteristics are considered. The design criteria for selecting pole-slot combination for loss distribution is proposed. The motor characteristics and loss are analyzed by 2D-FEA and the experimental verifications are discussed.
