Encryption and authentication of 802.11p traffic radio

The Internet of Things and big data provided by sensors and users, combined with mobile connections, enable various solutions and applications used for vehicles and traffic. Sensor data, as well as other data from the networks, can be transferred to the driver using existing technologies. With the help of this data, the driver can make driving and safety decisions. However, transferring data to and from the traffic environment is a delicate matter. The connections must be reliable and robust, but above all, the execution of data security must be thorough. The more data that are transferred and processed, the more vulnerable the vehicle's information system is to attacks. In addition, wireless data transfer protocols, such as Bluetooth, make it easy for outside attackers to access the systems. These threats must be addressed while designing data applications. This paper describes Centria's testing of the 802.11p connection with and without encryption. The purpose of the testing was to examine the impact of encryption on the speed and quality of the connection, as well as the number of sent and received data packets. During the testing, drives were repeated to ensure a reliable amount of research data for analysis. The gathered data were analyzed, and conclusions about the impact of encryption on the transferred data were verified.
