Power measurements under IEEE 1459-2010 standard on a microgrid with renewable sources

After almost a century and several attempts to take the harmonics and unbalance conditions impact on power measurements, the IEEE Std 1459-2010 has been accepted by the technical community as the most accurate way to categorize the measurement of power under nonsinusoidal and unbalanced conditions. A microgrid with renewable sources using switched-power converters like the voltage source inverters is a good example of a power system under nonsinusoidal conditions. This paper aims to simulate a grid-tied microgrid that includes photovoltaic generation, battery system, diesel generation and local loads for which different measurements points are evaluated using the IEEE Std 1459-2010 power theory. The analysis shows that the microgrid controls correctly compensates the fundamental power factor and shows the need to implement filtering systems to enhance the power quality in the microgrid. The results also show how the different power parameters vary with the increase of the harmonic distortion.
