Data fusion: from primary metrology to process measurement

In this paper, the author discusses a range of issues surrounding the use of data fusion in measurement science. Applications within NPL, looking at reducing uncertainty in measuring fundamental physical attributes, are considered NPL's role in the UK Faraday Scheme "INTErSECT" (Intelligent Sensors for Control Technologies) offers a different perspective on data fusion, where it is being used to effect new measurements in a variety of process technologies. The author will outline the scheme's initial work on the development of a framework in which data fusion can be carried out for these diverse scenarios.
