Dielectric Resonator Antenna With Tilted Beam

This letter presents a novel antenna concept that uses a tilted dielectric resonator antenna (TDRA) for a directional farfield pattern. The TDRA is placed on a substrate with a ground plane containing an H-shaped slot. The irregular shape of the TDRA directs the far field off broadside, along with the direction of the tilt. A novel method is used to construct the TDRA. Alumina substrate is cut by laser, and the pieces are glued together to make the TDRA. The TDRA has a compact size of 6.35 × 6.5 × 12 mm

. In the frequency range of 10.6-11.8 GHz, the far-field radiation is tilted on average 30° from the broadside with gain remaining over 6 dBi. The maximum tilt measured is 33°. Working principle of the design, novel fabrication method, and measurements made on the fabricated prototype are discussed.
