A structure and computationally-efficient design closure of compact spline-parameterized UWB monopole antenna

In this paper, a structure and computationally-efficient simulation-driven design closure of spline-parameterized UWB monopole antenna has been presented. We start from a reference design which is a conventional monopole antenna with rectangular radiator and L-shaped ground plane stub. The antenna geometry is then modified by parameterizing the ground plane using splines. This introduces additional degrees of freedom that are utilized for reducing the antenna footprint through explicit numerical minimization of the antenna size. For the sake of computational efficiency we utilize sequential optimization of local response surface approximation (RSA) models of the antenna structure. Spline parameterization in conjunction with efficient optimization techniques allows us to reduce the antenna size from 180 mm

of the reference design to just 163 mm
²
while maintaining the antenna reflection below -10 dB in the entire UWB frequency range.
