Design of a frequency-reconfigurable multipolarization antenna for wireless communication

In this paper, a novel frequency-reconfigurable multipolarization antenna for wireless communication is presented. The antenna consists of tunable crossed dipoles, which effective resonant length can be changed by using the MEMS switches. A fan-like frequency selective surface (FSS) and backed-cavity are employed to be as high frequency and low frequency ground plane respectively. Excitation is provided through two rigid coaxial cables, avoiding a complicated broadband balun. The antenna can be operated at 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz with four polarization states by means of MEMS switches and feed networks. The return loss and radiation behavior are presented, indicate a medium-level gain and acceptable cross-polarization isolation for multipolarization states in two separated bands.
