Using Laplace's equation for defining magnetizing current densities for 3D analysis with edge elements

A finite element approach to analyze electromagnetic devices in three dimensions is presented in this work. The approach is based on electric and magnetic vector potentials with edge elements and also based on the scalar electric potential with nodal elements. A voltage fed technique is employed. Using this technique the well known problem of continuity of the imposed current with edge elements is overcome. To present an example of the proposed approach, a claw-pole alternator is simulated. Comparison between simulated and experimental results shows good agreement.
