Design considerations of distributed broadband subscriber access network

Public networks can provide high-speed switching and transmission capabilities. However, a broadband subscriber access network (B-SAN) is needed to provide service integration, various connection types, and to support intelligent tele-services. In this paper, we investigate the B-SAN especially for accommodating the multi-party/multi-point multiple connection and distribution services. We first review the role of distributed B-SAN in comparison with the private- or public-domain MANS. We study the design objectives including bandwidth, connectivity, interface, OAM, and performance. As the results, we summarize the overall design requirements of the distributed B-SAN in the harmony of broadband backbone network and the forthcoming customer premises network (CPN).
