Design and fabrication of a wideband slot antenna for handset applications

A slot antenna configuration is proposed for multi-standard multifunction mobile handset. The slot has a hybrid shape of the combination of a close-ended circle and two rectangles. The feeding structure of the slot is comprised of a 50 Ω microstrip connected to a circular patch and an open-ended strip, a T-shaped step is adopted to connect the circular patch and the microstrip. The proposed antenna were fabricated by two methods, one of which is corroding double-layered copper covered FR4 board by acid, and the other is cutting copper foil. The method of cutting copper foil has the virtues of low cost and easy fabrication, it works well below 6GHz. The measured -6dB bandwidth of the proposed antenna covers 0.69-0.975 GHz and 2.09-3.32GHz.
