A PFC based SRM motor drive using a canonical switching cell converter

In this paper, a canonical switching cell (CSC) converter is proposed as a front end converter for power factor correction in a switch reluctance motor (SRM) drive. Aiming at low power household applications, SRM has demonstrated as one of the finest selection. On the selection part buck boost converter serves the best results when controlled output voltage is required over wide range. The speed of SRM is controlled by varying the DC-bus voltage appearing across the midpoint converter which is used to drive a 4-phase SRM. The proposed CSC converter working in discontinuous inductor current mode is used to control the DC output voltage and to improve the power quality at the AC mains. Total harmonic distortion (THD) at AC mains current when SRM is fed by diode bridge rectifier is observed 70% to 80%. Which is brought down to <5% as per the IEEE-519 standard.
