The ET-TREC Algorithm for Retrieving Typhoon Circulation

In this study, an algorithm named Energy Trend Constraint TREC (ET-TREC) that retrieves typhoon circulation field is proposed. Firstly, the radar reflectivity data is smoothed and interpolated into regular grids in preprocessing stage. Then for each grid at previous time step, a corresponding one with maximum correlation at current time step is found under energy trend constraint, the collection of these computed grid pairs reflects the movement of circulation structure and thus the wind field is obtained. Finally, a quality control is performed with total variation reconstruction to smooth the global wind field by eliminating error data and filling missing data points. Experimental result shows that this method more accurately reflects the characteristic of typhoon circulation structure in observation compared with traditional TREC analysis, and more stable to be applied in Chinese typhoon forecasting.
