DC circulating fault current suppression using a series resonant circuit for a 1000 MW, +/− 500 kV modular multilevel converter based HVDC system

First, a parameter sensitivity analysis is conducted on the modular multilevel converter (MMC) based HVDC system as pole-to-ground and pole-to-pole faults are applied with peak magnitudes evaluated in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment. The transmission corridor is composed of both cable and overhead line. A DC circulating current suppression methodology using resonance principles for pole-to-pole fault scenarios is described based on findings from the fault analysis.
