Acoustic coupling in linear arrays

Element interaction (acoustic coupling) and associated phenomena in acoustic arrays have been studied extensively due to their effect being generally regarded as detrimental on the array performance and especially on the directivity patterns. This work presents the results of experimental investigation and modelling of the angular and frequency behaviour of linear arrays. The study is focused on linear arrays for sonar applications with a low level of acoustic coupling between the elements through the array support structure and strong element coupling to the acoustic load. The connection between the resonant behaviour of the elements, the array directivity patterns and the angular dependence of its bandwidth caused by the cross-coupling is investigated.
