Magnetic fusion energy and space development

Large-scale space development will require efficient propulsion and power systems. Magnetic fusion energy conceptual designs are surveyed and indicate that fusion could provide attractive solutions to this need. Using deuterium and helium-3 as fuel gives fusion products that are primarily charged particles and could be guided by magnetic fields to allow high efficiency. The main 21st-century source of /sup 3/He appears to be the lunar surface. Procuring /sup 3/He and producing efficient, economical fusion power will require significant technical developments but both technologies plausibly can be developed on a relevant time scale, i.e. early in the 21st century. Possible future directions for space fusion energy research are discussed.<
