Scattering analysis for arbitrarily shaped dielectric bodies using characteristic modes

Characteristic mode (CM) theory has recently attracted great attention from antenna engineers. Other than its great potential in antenna designs and optimizations, this paper discusses the applications of the CM theory in the analysis of scattering from three-dimensional arbitrarily shaped dielectric bodies using a novel characteristic mode formulation we proposed very recently. It is a powerful tool in the investigation of the contributions of each mode to the scattering pattern. Such investigation provides useful information for further scattering pattern controlling. Numerical results are presented to validate the approach in scattering analysis.
