Development of the zinc/bromine battery at Johnson Controls Inc

The development of a zinc/bromine battery system which combines attractive energy density and a potential for long cycle life at low cost is presented. The battery uses an all-plastic construction that includes carbon-filled polyethylene electrodes. Complexation of bromine lowers its reactivity, thereby minimizing self-discharge and corrosion problems. A 50 kWh zinc/bromine battery designed for testing in a Ford Aerostar minivan is described, and test results are presented. Test results from its use as a 20 kWh load management battery are also presented. A third potential application of the system, as a high-power reserve-type battery, is discussed.<
