Dynamic coordination and synchronization plots of dynamic phase relations

An essential mechanism of dynamic nonlinear coordination between interacting physiological variables are dynamic phase synchronizations. The presented method enables the quantification of intermittent phase synchronizations at any frequency ratios. The method was applied to a simulated driven neuronal generator during the transition period between different synchronization modes. The estimated instantaneous frequency ratios are presented in the "dynamic coordination plot". This plot can be filtered by a synchronization criterion leading to the "dynamic synchronization plot". The mean characteristics of those coordinations and synchronizations, which characterize the behavior during a time interval, are presented in respective histograms, namely the "mean dynamic coordination plot" and the "mean dynamic synchronization plot".
