Modeling and experimental imaging of arrhythmias in cardiac cell networks

Rigorous mathematical formulations are now available to model cardiac cells. Computer simulations are used to model the activity of networks of cells and to simulate the mechanisms of arrhythmias. Parallel developments of the electrophysiologic techniques of patch clamp and single channel recording, in situ microelectrode recording, and optical fluorescence imaging using voltage sensitive dyes have provided the experimental data and validation. The current state of the art in modeling and experimentation of cardiac cells and cell networks are reviewed.
