Solving Ill-Posed Optimal Power Flow Problems Via Fritz-John Optimality Conditions

Optimal power flow (OPF) programs must be able to provide sound operating points for power systems under different conditions while meeting a large number of constraints. These constraints, however, either due to the operating conditions at hand or by construction, can have linearly dependent gradients, thus defining ill-behaved feasible sets. This paper analyzes the use of an alternative set of optimality conditions, derived from the Fritz-John (FJ) conditions, to represent OPF solutions in such critical cases. Results are presented for realistic test systems.
