Synthetic adaptive optoelectronic color camouflage skins

This paper reports, for the first time, an artificial adaptive color camouflage skin device that is able to sense the surrounding environment and match its color autonomously. Such skin device combines ultra-thin Si based multiplexed arrays of thermal actuators and photodetectors in laminated, multilayer configurations on flexible substrates, with overlaid arrangements of pixelated, color-changing elements. Demonstration devices are capable of producing black-and-white patterns that spontaneously match those of the surroundings, without user input or external measurement.
