Curved Distant Binocular Filter for Autostereoscopic Imaging

Various physical and technical restrictions prevent realization of perfect autostereoscopic (glasses-free or naked-eye) displays. Simple alternative for implementing autostereoscopic visual systems for some applications is the distant binocular filter (DBF). DBF allows autostereoscopic imaging using off-the-shelf stereoscopic displays originally designed for stereo glasses ( active or passive ones). This paper describes the curved DBF for implementing autostereoscopic systems with increased horizontal field-of-view (FOV). Computer simulation is performed to define the optimal liquid crystal (LC) structure of DBF. Experimental sample of curved LC DBF for frame-sequential autostereoscopic imaging is described.
