Steps to a fully computerized cardiac catheterization laboratory

On the basis of 20 years of experience the authors discuss desirable future developments of the facilities and performance of the cardiac hemodynamic-angiographic laboratory. It is proposed that three self-supporting modular subsystems be merged into an integrated system using decentralized interfaces and networks. The subsystems perform (a) hemodynamic data acquisition, evaluation, and reporting; (b) fluoroscopic and angiocardiographic image generation; and (c) digital image processing. In addition, an interface to the hospital information system is recommended. Important data to be transferred online between these subsystems are X-ray data, contrast-injection parameters, imaging geometry, hemodynamic signals, and processed data. The organization and advantages of such an integrated computerized system are discussed.<
