A harmonic consideration for the implementation of light rail transit system in Kuala Lumpur

The increasing harmonic pollution appearing in distribution networks due to light rail transit implementation is presented in this paper. A complete analysis is done by using the proposed harmonic power flow analysis program that is able to treat multiple harmonic sources simultaneously, including measurement results and/or theoretical values. The program is based on the direct solution of the admittance matrix. A manual analysis is first developed as a guide before conducting the computation by computer, and as a guide to determining the component modeling-especially the transformer's model. Filter installation looks to be the unique solution in reducing the harmonic level even though it will be costly to the system.
