Voltage Ride-Through (VRT) Recommendations for Distributed Electronic-Coupled Generation

This paper provides voltage ride-through recommendations for electronic-coupled generators, like solar PV inverters, interconnected in the distribution system. These recommendations are based on field measurements captured by power quality monitors placed in Southern California. Present solar PV inverter standards voltage ride-through was designed for low penetration scenarios. As penetration of distributed generation (DG) increases significantly, they may become major generation sources to the grid therefore their disruption could be detrimental. Additionally, it will provided are the test results of a smart solar PV inverter that has voltage ride through capabilities. The testing was performed in Southern California Edison's Distributed Energy Resources Laboratory in Westminster, California. The results detailed here provide information that can be used to develop national standards for advanced features on solar PV inverters. Finally, it will provide an overview of the potential benefits if the proposed set points are placed in national and state standards.
