Surge Protection Of 35 Kv UD Cable Systems

Following a summary of the principal findings of EPRI Research Project RP 795- 1, "Surge Behavior of UD Cable Systems," the surges appearing on radial UD circuits are characterized. Alternate surge protection schemes are presented; a view for a coordinated engineering approach is presented for insulation protection of 35 kV UD circuits. An appeal is made to adopt proven computer simulation techniques for insulation coordination studies and to key insulation coordination to key variables which are local to the system under design.
