Power system modelling and simulation for design of 2*90/-40 Mvar SVC

The performance of static-VAR compensation plants (SVC), which are widely in use in electrical power systems, need to be checked with detailed studies in order to design optimal compensation schemes with respect to amount of reactive power, location of installation, control strategy, distortion of system voltages (harmonics). A two-step design flow is described, which leads to an optimized final design of all components. The parameters for representation of the equipment are of significant importance for the design of the SVC and are explained together with planning principles and criteria to be adopted to the different studies. The approach was tested during the design of a 2*90/-40 War SVC.
