The analysis of tradeoffs between power section hardware and feedback gains for a dc distribution system dc-to-dc converter [on ships]

The authors present a robust algorithm for controlling buck choppers that includes feedforward and droop. Averaged and detailed simulation models are used to optimize the design of the buck output capacitance and the feedback gains. In particular, an effort was made to simultaneously minimize voltage ripple and control effort while avoiding sustained oscillations in the duty cycle. The final design is tested using a prototype 9 kW chopper supplying a wide variety of loads including constant power loads.
