The Automated ASIC Mini-fab: An Approach To Small-lot ASIC Express Computer-aided Design And Production

A group of scientists and engineers have conceptualized and designed an "automated ASIC mini-fab" capable of dramatically reducing production times for small-lot ASICs and prototype VLSI chips. Demand for quick turn-around small-order ASICs, predicted to reach 25% of the total IC market by 1992, coupled with market demand for rapid introduction of new IC designs cannot be met by traditional design and fabrication techniques. Current technologies are being subjected to continuing stress as trends continue toward increasing wafer diameters and sub-micron lithography.
