Fast initial acquisition of transmitter power for the reverse link DS/CDMA cellular systems

This paper proposes a fast initial acquisition technique for the carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR)-based transmitter power control (TPC) scheme in the reverse link direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) cellular system to support high capacity wireless multimedia communication systems that includes both long-holding-time media such as voice as well as short-holding-time media such as the e-mail message. In the proposed scheme, the base station (BS) calculates the interference signal level averaged over all the interference signal level of currently connected mobile stations (MSs), and broadcasts the required received-power level for a certain target CIR level via the downlink broadcast channel. Using the broadcasted information as well as the average path loss measured in the downlink, each MS calculates the initial transmitter power level with the same manner as that for the power-based TPC scheme. Computer simulation confirms that the proposed scheme can achieve higher throughput performance than the conventional scheme by employing the optimum power margin of 5 dB, without degrading so much system capacity of the long-holding-time media, especially when the average message length of the short-holding-time media becomes short.
