Electromagnetic response of a dipping anisotropic half-space

An idealized two-dimensional anisotropic half-space model for the earth is adopted. The axis of the conductivity tensor is inclined at an arbitrary angle with respect to the air-earth interface. The surface impedance is analyzed for the case where the sole component of the magnetic field is parallel to the strike (the direction of a line formed by the intersect of a stratum with a horizontal plane) of the structure. The incident field is allowed to vary in the direction perpendicular to the strike rather than being invariant as in previous analyses. It is indicated that the surface impedance is a diagnostic of the degree of anisotropy and the tilt or dip angle of the striations.<
