Hybrid network architecture: a prospective integrated information infrastructure for manufacturing enterprise

Inspired by an investigation of the network service and administration requirement of several large manufacturing enterprises, the authors propose a hybrid network architecture that is composed of a high speed computer network and low speed field bus network. The former works as an intranet. There are some intelligent agents coordinating the whole network. Besides traditional management information such as stock, sales, personnel, etc., this new kind of network will bring real-time state information and control information of assembly lines, manufacturing equipment, etc., to the enterprise decision makers. They regard it as a prospective integrated information infrastructure for manufacturing enterprise, which will help to realize management and control integration so as to greatly enhance the competence of the enterprise. The potency requirement of the hybrid network is analyzed. The hierarchy structure and its advantages are outlined. The drawbacks of setting it up are also identified. A prototype experimental system has been established in their laboratory.
