Simulation of the body surface potential map using a realistic heart and thorax model

The body surface potential map (BSPM) was simulated using a three-dimensional computer model of the entire human heart with a realistic geometry. The heart model is based on cellular automaton theory and enables the simulation of the depolarization and repolarization process as well as the calculation of the corresponding electrocardiogram. The influence of internal inhomogeneities of the thorax on the BSPM was considered by means of a realistically shaped volume conductor model including the outer thorax surface and the surfaces of the lungs. The relevant geometry was derived from magnetic resonance (MR) images.
