Early in World War II, Germany's amazing rush of victories astounded even Chancellor Adolf Hitler. In the autumn of 1940, with no allies left in Europe, two problems loomed for the' British: to deter the German Luftwaffe's night bombers that were destroying their industry, and to defeat the U-boats sinking supplies from America. The situation prompted the new Prime Minister Winston Churchill to vow publicly that if the Germans overran the island, the British would continue to fight even from their colonial bases.
