Application of a role-based methodology to represent command and control processes using extended Petri nets

In the modelling of the inter and intra activities of nodes or agencies of command and control systems a number of factors must be considered. The consideration of these factors has led to the development of the role-based methodology. Having defined a modelling approach the next step was to identify an appropriate technique for applying this approach to command and control system modelling. It was found that extended Petri nets were an ideal way of representing role-based models. This paper introduces the role-based methodology. It then outlines how extended Petri nets are used as the implementation method for models developed by this technique. It concludes by discussing some of the progress made in applying this technique in practice.
