Reconfigurable FSS using multilayer conducting and slotted array structures

Exploiting the interlayer coupling and relative position of multilayer frequency selective surface (FSS) structures opens up a number of possibilities for reconfigurable and/or switchable frequency characteristics. For an effective result a deeper understanding of the coupling mechanisms (propagating and evanescent) coupling is needed. In order to achieve the correct coupling, the element geometry and its relative position is an important design factor. Reconfigurable FSS (RFSS) type responses offer an advantage in applications where angular stability is a critical factor. A computer model based on a coupled integral equation method, originating from earlier work by Vardaxoglou, Stylianou and Debono (see IEE Proc. Part H., Microwaves, Antennas and Propagat., vol.139, no.6, p.539-41, 1992) on multilayer screens, is used to predict the results. These include structures with conducting and slotted arrays. This paper reviews the RFSS work at Loughborough University identifying key issues is their performance.
