Communications: Alaska's giant satellite network: Telephone services and radio and television broadcasts for virtually every Alaskan community are ensured by the state's satellite

The northwestern Alaskan village of Kivalina lies along the Chukchi Sea, about 85 miles above the Arctic Circle, in what appears to be a wasteland. For centuries, the people of Kivalina have subsisted on the whale, walrus, and seal they take from the sea and the carlbou and moose they hunt on land. Today such modern touches as frame houses are replacing sod dwellings in Kivalina, and the people enjoy modern radio- and television-broadcast service. They also have access to the nationwide telephone network that serves the rest of the United States.
