When the first 64-kb dynamic RAMs built in the United States arrived recently on the market, they were halled as the bridge between LSI and VLSI memory chips-but what was also significant is that RAM makers had taken three years longer than they anticipated to deliver the new chips. Some industry observers raised questions, moreover, about whether the chips had circuit problems that rendered them less competitive than Japanese counterparts, and whether optimally designed 64-kb dynamic RAMs were still several years away.
