The Voyager 1 spacecraft kept its appointment with Saturn and yielded clues to the mystery of that planet and its rings. "Stealth" technology, a research program of the U.S. Department of Defense that could enable "invisible" aircraft to sneak by enemy radar, came under public scrutiny. Final touches were under way to the avionics of the troubled Space Shuttle program to prepare the $8.5 billion reusable spacecraft for launching.
