The U.S. Navy has begun planning for the next generation of sea-based aircraft, which could revolutionize naval aviation. Termed V/STOL, for vertical/short takeoff and landing, these aircraft would be capable of operating from most types of naval vessels by taking off either vertically or conventionally within the confines of a comparatively short runway.
