Solid-state devices: The traditional bipolar vs. MOS battle lines are blurring

The past year saw established bipolar and metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) technologies stretched to their limits to produce the densest, most complex integrated circuits yet. However, that very effort suggested the time might be at hand to exploit the potential of a new generation of technologies waiting in the wings. Bipolar integrated-injection logic (I2L), MOS-based charge-coupled devices (CCDs), and even solid-state bubble devices, among others, all seemed ready to meet at least some of the challenges.
