Computers: The gread weather network: Weather forecasting can be improved through better models and speedier reporting

Meteorologists in the Boston office of the U.S. Weather Service were tracking a storm in the Atlantic, centered about 300 miles east of Norfolk, Va. Satellite images and computer-based forecasts from the National Meteorological Center in Washington, D, C., indicated the storm would move northeast in the ocean and pass well east of Boston. With this information, the Boston forecasters issued a local prediction of 2 to 4 inches of snow for the next day, Sunday, December 6, 1981.
